Amidst indications that government could go ahead with FDI in multi
brand retail, Union Commerce Minister Anand Sharma is meeting with Chief
Ministers of Punjab and Haryana on Thursday in this connection.
After writing to the Chief Ministers of Punjab, Haryana and Uttarakhand for garnering support on FDI issue, Union Commerce Ministers has started meeting the Chief Ministers of various states. Sharma had also met Uttarakhand Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna.
In a press conference held on Wednesday, he had said that the Centre's decision would create job opportunities in states and would also help restructure the basic infrastructure of the state.
Remarkably, the Centre had earlier on November 24 last announced to allow 51 percent FDI in multi brand retail but it was compelled to not to go ahead with the plan amidst strident opposition by a section of allies along with the Opposition, BJP.
At that time, the UPA government had announced that it would be incumbent upon the states to execute the FDI plan.
Taking this into consideration, the Centre has again started garnering support on this contentitious issue.
After meeting Uttarakhand Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna, Union Commerce Minister Sharma is most likely to hold a meeting with Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal as well as Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda in this regard.
A high level delegation of Commerce Ministry will also be accompanying him which will also discuss over the industrial development in the state.
Remarkably, SP government in Uttar Pradesh has been up against Centre's move to bring FDI in retail when state's Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav refused to work upon Centre's request in this regard. Also FDI issue had met with opposition during Mayawati's regime.
