Mumbai local train services hit as Western Railway motormen go on strike

The striking motormen demanded appointment of assistant motormen so that they do not have to work overtime. They also demanded better security.
Within a couple of hours, Mumbai's local train services were hit badly with the frequency of trains coming down drastically on some routes.
The main suburban railway station of Churchgate in south Mumbai saw unprecedented crowds as people started gathering, owing to lack of train services - which usually run one every five minutes.

Railway officials said all 434 motormen of the zone started their strike around 3 pm. The PRO of the Western Railway said efforts were on to sort out the issues raised by the striking workers at the earliest.
Meanwhile, Western Railway officials have started a meeting with the striking motormen and are negotiating their terms and conditions.
"We will try to resolve their issues and have them resume work immediately," a Western Railway official said.
Western Railway management has also started making alternate arrangements and deployed non-striking motormen with extra shifts.

Announcements were being made at the local stations appealing commuters to take alternative means of transport instead of depending on local trains.

Because of the strike, trains were running late by more than half-an-hour late. Being the peak hour for the people returning home from work, they were facing problems.
