Shiv Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray underwent a three-hour
angioplasty on Friday to remove blockages in three arteries. Doctors
attending to him said they left the blockage (60%) in a fourth artery
undisturbed since it isn’t significant.
Dr Samuel Mathew Kalarickal, a cardiologist who was part of the three-member team that carried out the angioplasty at Lilavati Hospital, said, “All the three arteries opened up quite well with the stents and we have got good results. He is doing well and he can get back to work by Monday morning.”
Fifty-one-year-old Thackeray was admitted to the hospital after he complained of chest pain on Monday. An angiography revealed there were at least three blockages in his arteries. “Two major arteries had 100% blockages while the third one had an 80-90% blockage. Another artery had a 60% blockage, but we may or may not conduct any procedure. We may go for medication, instead, as there is no medical urgency,” said another senior doctor from the hospital.
According to sources close to the hospital’s cardiology department, six stents, each of which costs around Rs1.25 lakh, were used in the angioplasty.
Hospital sources said Thackeray will be kept in the intensive care unit of the hospital for a day and will be shifted to a ward later. He is expected to be discharged from the hospital by Sunday.
Doctors attending to him said Thackeray would have to take care of his diet and his lifestyle from now on and will have exercise regularly as well. “In patients such him, there is always a chance of a relapse if they ignore their health. He will have to maintain his lipid profile, and diabetes and stress levels, as well as exercise regularly,” said a doctor.
After the angiography, the Shiv Sena executive president spoke to his father, Bal Thackeray. His wife, Rashmi, and sons Aditya and Tejas were present at the hospital along with his estranged cousin and Maharashtra Navanirman Sena (MNS) chief, Raj Thackeray, his mother, Kundataii, wife Sharmila and children Amit and Urvashi, said a Sena source. Shiv Sena leaders Manohar Joshi, Ramdas Kadam, Subhash Desai, Anil Desai among several others were also present.
The team of cardiologists that conducted angioplasty comprised Dr Samuel Mathew, who had performed an angioplasty on Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray three years ago, Dr Ajit Menon and Dr Ajit Desai.
